On Christmas Eve 1898 the first ever ship-to-shore radio transmission took place between East Goodwin Lightship and South Foreland Lighthouse, while Marconi remained on dry land his assistant, George Kemp, spent 22 days at sea, for 17 of them the sea was so rough no supplies could be delivered. Kemp’s diaries make for harrowing, if, from this distance, almost amusing reading.
